One Wimbledon star that most sports fans haven't heard of is a billionaire whose net worth is bigger than Cristiano Ronaldo's. Former Romanian tennis player Ion Tiriac has amassed a colossal fortune since retiring from the sport in 1979.

The versatile athlete had a modest tennis career, never making it past the fourth round at Wimbledon. His best Grand Slam performance came at Roland Garros in 1968, where he reached the quarter-finals. Tiriac did, however, taste glory in doubles, winning the Roland Garros title in 1970.

He also represented his country in three Davis Cup finals. Outside of tennis, Tiriac was an accomplished ice hockey player, representing his country at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Tokyo.

After retiring from top-level sport, Tiriac, now 85, turned to coaching, working with players such as Boris Becker, Guillermo Vilas and Marat Safin. But it was away from sport that he found his greatest success.

Tiriac began an investment career after the fall of communism in Romania, eventually founding the Tiriac Group, which has assets in real estate, the automotive industry and financial services, among other sectors.

According to Forbes, Tiriac has amassed a fortune estimated at £1.6 billion. That is almost four times more than Ronaldo, whose fortune is estimated at £450 million, partly thanks to the £170 million a year he receives from Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr.

In fact, Tiriac is worth more than Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who are estimated to be worth £500 million. Naturally, given his wealth, the Romanian is able to enjoy the finer things in life.

The Bucharest-based billionaire is said to own a car and motorcycle collection of more than 400 models, including vehicles that belonged to Al Capone, Sammy Davis Jr and Elton John. He remains involved with tennis, however, and was pictured watching the French Open at Roland Garros in June.
