Why don't Manchester City wear blue shirts against Inter Milan in the Champions League?

Manchester City's new Oasis-inspired fourth kit has been revealed, but the club will only wear it a handful of times, including their Champions League opener against AC Milan.

The new jersey is the brainchild of Oasis member Noel Gallagher, created to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the band’s iconic album, Definitely Maybe. Taking its colours from the album’s legendary cover, the jersey represents the latest partnership between City, PUMA and Noel Gallagher, who also designed the font that will adorn the jerseys in the cup competitions.

The launch of 'Definitely City' also features a clothing line designed by Gallagher, modelled by Pep Guardiola alongside first-team players in a recreation of the Definitely Maybe cover.

Fans eager to see the shirt worn throughout the Premier League will be disappointed, however, as the club have confirmed that it will only be worn in Europe. They say it will be worn “exclusively in select European matches, embodying the spirit of a club ready to unleash itself on Europe's biggest stages.”

The shirt will debut next week in the home game against Inter Milan – a replay of the 2023 final – and will then only be worn away from home in Europe from then on. City will face Slovan Bratislava, Sporting, Juventus and PSG away in the group stage, although PSG's black home kit could be the only other opportunity before the last 16.

Gallagher said: “It’s a real honour. When PUMA approached us at one of the games to design a jersey, it took us about five seconds to say yes. It’s the same colour palette as the cover of Definitely Maybe – it’s unique but it’s really striking, and I think it looks great. When you see people representing your club, it’s important that they look good.”

“Maybe has definitely never lost its magic for me, I just think it’s an incredible insight into who we were. With this anniversary, I’ve listened to it a lot more than I ever will, it makes me smile, it was a great time. It’s spawned a great football kit, its legacy lives on.”

The jersey is predominantly cream in colour, with a light blue collar, sleeves and panels on each side. There is pink trim on the sleeves and side panels, while the pink badge has a wavy effect extending from it – a motif repeated on the back of the jersey.

The words “Definitely City” are written on the inside of the collar in Gallagher's hand.

The shorts will be plain blue, as will the socks, with the Puma logo and City badge in pink. The release comes as Oasis announced a sensational reunion last month, sending millions of fans rushing to buy tickets for a limited UK tour – with the launch of tickets marred by pricing issues and queues of hundreds of thousands of fans.
