Trent Alexander-Arnold has been warned that a Real Madrid player would be unhappy if he joined Los Blancos. The 25-year-old's contract at Liverpool expires next summer, and his future at Anfield remains uncertain.

New manager Arne Slot wants to see players earn their place in his plans and is putting no pressure on Alexander-Arnold to sign a contract. Remarkably, Alexander-Arnold is also not the only star player whose contract expires in July 2025, with captain Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah also free to leave Merseyside unless they can secure an extension.

While Trent has promised Liverpool will be his top priority for the 2024/25 season, the expiry of the contract means Carlo Ancelotti can begin negotiations with the versatile full-back as early as January. But Jamie Carragher has warned that one Galactico in particular would not be happy if Alexander-Arnold was brought to the Bernabeu.

Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool's Premier League clash with Brentford, Jamie Redknapp said: “It's a question of, 'What do you want for the rest of your life?'

“Does Trent want to stay here for the rest of his career or does he want to try something else? And if he does, when Real Madrid call him it will be very difficult for any player. I completely understand the dilemma he finds himself in.”

“He's in a dream position as a footballer: 25 years old, one year left on his contract, he can see how this year goes, he can wait until Christmas, I'm sure there will already be discussions with other clubs, let's be honest, that's how it works. It will be interesting to see how it goes.”

However, Liverpool legend Carragher has urged Trent to be cautious if Real Madrid come knocking on his door soon, replying: “I think [Dani] Carvajal would also have his say, people would talk about Trent. He has only won the European Cup six times and the Euros this summer, so I don't think he would be very happy.”

Carvajal is a mainstay at right-back. He has been at Real Madrid for 11 years and has won four La Liga titles, six Champions Leagues, two Copa del Reys and five UEFA Super Cups. And at 32, he shows no signs of slowing down.

The Spaniard was a key part of his country's Euro 2024 campaign, lifting the trophy alongside his compatriots after beating England 2-1 in the final. Should Alexander-Arnold join Madrid, there is no guarantee he would be given the right-back spot ahead of Carvajal, especially given everything he has done for the club in 418 appearances.

Should the England international opt to retrain in a midfield role – a position Jurgen Klopp gave him game time in towards the end of his Liverpool tenure – there are a range of other top players who could also replace him on the Bernabeu bench. Jude Bellingham has set La Liga alight since joining from Borussia Dortmund last summer, while Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga have all impressed Ancelotti.
