Pedro Porro flirted with the possibility of joining Real Madrid
Pedro Porro admits links with Real Madrid have “filled him with enthusiasm” and he is ready to replace injured Dani Carvajal if the Spanish giants come calling.
Porro is a regular starter under Ange Postecoglou and has played virtually every minute for Tottenham in the Premier League this season. But his future in England has been thrown into doubt following his links with Los Blancos, who are scrambling for cover at right-back.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been touted as an option for Real, but they would likely have to wait until the end of the season to sign the Liverpool star when his contract expires.
Porro could not hide his emotions when asked about the prospect of traveling to the Spanish capital. “It fills you with excitement, doesn’t it?” he said in an interview with Relevo.
“You have to concentrate on your job, but if Real Madrid are interested in you, it's because you do things well. That's how I think about it every day. Well, if this moment has to happen, it will come and if it doesn't, well, I will continue to work as I do.
Asked if he was at a stage in his career where he was ready to succeed Carvajal, Porro replied: “Yes. Obviously yes, because as I told you, I'm trying to work and to give the best of myself every day.
Ange Postecoglou could be powerless to prevent Pedro Porro's departure if Real Madrid call him
“If I have the chance to make that big jump tomorrow, I will be prepared for that reason. I will have a lot more experience. If you had told me that years ago, I would have told you no. Because I'm honest. Let's see what happens.
Porro is unlikely to effectively tempt Real to make his move in north London as the Lilywhites look to hold on to their best players.
The 25-year-old was snapped up from Girona by Manchester City in 2019, but left the Etihad Stadium without ever making a senior appearance under Pep Guardiola.
His stock rose sharply during a two-season loan spell at Sporting Lisbon, which was eventually made permanent. Spurs spent £39million on him last year, and he has become a major player in Postecoglou's ranks.
Porro finished last campaign with 10 Premier League goals from right-back after scoring six in 15 appearances the previous season. Tottenham are currently ninth in the table after a rocky start to Postecoglou's tenure in charge.
