Micah Richards was left embarrassed on Sky Sports after colleague Jamie Redknapp asked him about a poor performance against Chelsea when he was a player. Former Manchester City star Richards was on Sky Sports' first Super Sunday show of the 2024/25 Premier League season ahead of his former side's visit to Chelsea – before quickly asking if they could “move on”.

Richards, Redknapp and former City and Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge gave their thoughts on the blockbuster match, reflecting on Chelsea's 3-0 win over City at the start of the 2006/07 season, when young Richards was deemed worthy of a starting role.

The now much-loved commentator was repeatedly tormented by Chelsea left winger Arjen Robben during that game. The trio of commentators were shown a clip of Chelsea's third goal, where Robben sent a through ball to Wayne Bridge, who got past Richards to set up Didier Drogba for his spectacular header.

Redknapp particularly enjoyed the footage of his colleague being skinned alive, while Richards laughed off the friendly banter. Former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp persisted in his trolling, asking: “What would you say if you saw a player do that now?”

Richards replied: “I'd say he got his positioning wrong,” which led to further banter between the three players. As Redknapp continued to rub salt in the wound, Richards sheepishly joked: “Can we move on?”

The 2006/07 season was Richards' first in the City first team, having made a breakthrough the previous season. The young full-back had his baptism of fire against the reigning champions, with John Terry giving the home side an early lead.

Frank Lampard netted a deflected goal in the 26th minute after a superb move from Michael Essien. Drogba's third goal in the 78th minute gave the Citizens an early win against a 10-man City side.

Eighteen years later, the same match at Stamford Bridge promises to be another thrilling one. On this occasion, City, four consecutive English champions, are the favourites under Pep Guardiola.

Chelsea have been something of an unknown quantity since the arrival of new manager Enzo Maresca from Leicester City, while concerns over the quality of their squad, compliance with profit and sustainability rules and spending sprees persist.

Maresca said ahead of his first official match in charge of the Blues: “After eight or nine years together you can do so many different things. Pep is not a manager who always does the same thing, he changes all the time. For us it will be exactly the same. It will be a difficult but exciting game to start against the champions.”

“We will try to do our best to win games. For me, this is my personal opinion, the big difference between us at the moment and the teams that dominate English football, it is just a question of time.

“These clubs have worked with the same manager for eight or nine years and here we are for a month. For sure, with time, we will close the gap and I hope that can happen very soon.”
