KYlian Mbappe and Vinícius Júnior converted penalties to help Real Madrid win 2-0 at Real Sociedad after the hosts were repeatedly denied on the woodwork in La Liga on Saturday.
Vinicius put the visitors ahead in the 58th minute after a needless handball from former Manchester City player Sergio Gómez gave the Madrid forward the chance to break the tie.
Mbappé ended the game in the 75th minute after a video review by the referee determined that Sociedad defender Jon Aramburu had stepped on Vinícius' foot in the box.
Carlo Ancelotti's side have drawn their other two league games and their first away win leaves them one point behind leaders Barcelona ahead of a trip to Girona on Sunday. Real Madrid begin their Champions League defence against Stuttgart on Tuesday.
Sociedad matched Real Madrid's pace and power in a frenetic first half.
Luka Sucic hit the post twice, including a missile that hit the crossbar in the 25th minute, and Sheraldo Becker also sent a ball onto the crossbar.
At the other end, Madrid relied on Mbappe to provide their main threat, while Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro made the right call to push away an Antonio Rudiger header.
Sucic sent another ball onto the post following a pass from Umar Sadiq seconds after half-time.
But Real Sociedad were unsettled when Gómez raised his arm above his head and blocked a strike from Arda Guler, allowing Vinícius to head to where he fired just past Remiro. Mbappé then beat Remiro when his shot was pulled one way as the keeper dived the other.
Madrid forward Brahim Díaz was substituted in the first half with an apparent leg problem.
Veteran Leadership
Jesus Navas scored a powerful shot from a tight angle to give Sevilla their first win of the season after beating Getafe 1-0 at home.
The 38-year-old full-back won the European Championship with Spain this summer, in addition to his 2010 World Cup. He subsequently announced his retirement from international football and would also retire from club competition at the end of 2024.
His goal in the 23rd minute took some of the pressure off new coach Francisco García Pimienta.
Sevilla defender Marcão was substituted in the first half after receiving a heavy blow to the head.
Espanyol's hat-trick
Javi Puado scored a hat-trick to lead Espanyol to a 3-2 home win over Alaves and secure a second straight victory for the Barcelona-based club who spent last season in the second division.
Puado opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a low cross. He then headed home another goal in the 56th minute after Tomas Conechny had equalised for Alaves.
The Espanyol forward scored the winning goal from the penalty spot after Nahuel Tenaglia had levelled at 2-2. Puado converted the penalty after goalkeeper Antonio Sivera tripped Walid Cheddira in the area.
Ayoze Perez also scored late on as Villarreal won 2-1 at Mallorca. It was his third goal in five games since Ayoze joined Villarreal from Real Betis in the summer.
