Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has two major concerns in his squad
Manchester United lost the Community Shield after Erik ten Hag's men were beaten 7-6 by Manchester City on penalties (1-1 after 90 minutes) at Wembley on Saturday.
Alejandro Garnacho came on to give the Red Devils the lead in the 82nd minute. But with just a minute to go, Bernardo Silva came on as a substitute after beating Andre Onana with a header that forced a penalty shootout.
Bernardo then had his penalty saved in the shootout and while he had a chance to win it, Jadon Sancho saw his shot saved. Jonny Evans sent his shot over the bar and it was Manuel Akanji who had the final say. The Swiss defender made no mistake to give City the win.
While Garnacho has thrived, Ten Hag has seen some worrying performances from his players ahead of the new season. Express Sport's player ratings assess the performances of United's players in the Community Shield.
Bernardo Silva scored late in the game after coming on as a substitute for Manchester City
Manchester United
André Onana 6/10
A quiet first half but the Cameroonian was beaten by McAtee who hit the post. He denied Bernardo in the penalty shootout but that was his only save.
Diogo Dalot 5/10
If Ten Hag had wanted to bring on Noussair Mazraoui before the match, Dalot would not have changed his mind. The Portuguese full-back showed himself to be vulnerable against a not very devious Jeremy Doku.
Harry Maguire 7/10
He did his job leading the back line without too many problems, although he struggled to get through the lines.
Lisandro Martinez has struggled at left-back for Manchester United
Jonny Evans 5/10
The 36-year-old is out of place in defence and will probably not be able to keep his place when Matthijs de Ligt arrives. He missed the decisive penalty.
Lisandro Martinez 5/10
Too relaxed in possession of the ball, he was lucky not to be punished by McAtee after a lost pass on the edge of his own area.
Casemiro 7/10
It was one of his best performances in United's midfield, even though he had to face youngsters O'Reilly and McAtee. He scored in the penalty shootout.
Kobbie Mainoo 6/10
A quiet player by his standards, although the youngster has only recently returned to the club after Euro 2024 and his fitness levels may not yet be at their best.
Amad was one of Manchester United's most impressive strikers
Love 8/10
Looking for a spark, United found it with an electric performance from the 22-year-old. He wreaked havoc on the City defence and should have scored at least one goal himself. A promising performance.
Mason 4/10 Frame
He is yet to prove himself in a United shirt and looks a little lost in his number 10 role behind Bruno Fernandes. Where does he fit into Ten Hag's team? Hooked before the hour mark and can't complain.
Marcus Rashford 4/10
Amad and Fernandes were the two forwards to shine, but Rashford had his chance, but he hit the post with a golden opportunity. A shadow of the player we've seen before.
Bruno Fernandes 7/10
He worked tirelessly in an unusual lone striker role and was only able to score a fantastic goal after an offside flag. Everything United created in the second half came through him. He scored in the penalty shootout.
Marcus Rashford missed two golden chances for Man Utd
Replacements
Scott McTominay (at 59') 6/10
He made a cameo appearance to find the winning goal, but his overhead shot from six yards left him red-faced. He scored in the penalty shootout.
Alejandro Garnacho (at 59') 8/10
He picked up where Amad left off and should have provided an assist, but Rashford missed his shot. But his solo goal to win the game reflected his enormous potential. He scored in the penalty shootout.
Facundo Pellistri (at 59') 5/10
He was revealed by Garnacho and was beaten by Bernardo for the equalizer.
Toby Collyer (at 59') 6/10
It was the youngster's debut and he didn't appear fazed at the back.
Jadon Sancho (at 83') N/A
Penalty stopped during the penalty shootout.
