Ruben Amorim's Sporting beat Man City 4-1.
Manchester United are usually the Manchester club to endure a tough night in Europe since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. However, on Tuesday it was Manchester City's turn to endure a nightmarish Champions League exit as the Pep Guardiola's team lost 4-1 at Sporting.
New United head coach Ruben Amorim oversaw the devastating demolition job during his emotional farewell at the Jose Alvalade Stadium.
And the Red Devils couldn't resist joining the online fanfare after Viktor Gyokeres' ruthless hat-trick and Maximiliano Araujo's cancellation of Phil Foden's opener.
Shock and celebration swirled through sections of United's social media as the club's new boss spearheaded the humiliation of their bitter rivals.
And United reminded that Amorim was on his way to Old Trafford by reposting one of their initial posts confirming his appointment on X.
The Under-16 giants announced last week that Amorim had agreed a contract until 2027, just days after sacking Erik ten Hag.
After his final match in charge of Sporting at former club Braga on Sunday, the 39-year-old will start work in Manchester on Monday.
Amorim's first match as United manager is on November 24 at Portman Road when they face Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
Man Utd have issued a recall to Ruben Amorim.
United fans were impressed by Sporting's counter-attacking masterclass against City, creating five chances to the visitors' two despite having just 27 per cent possession.
Sporting's triumph propelled the club to second place in the Champions League table, having won three and drawn one in their four matches so far.
This adds to the Lions' perfect start to their Primeira Liga title defense, winning all 10 of their games, scoring 35 goals and conceding just three times.
However, Amorim insists his Red Devils side will not be able to play the same way, suggesting he may have to adapt his tactics initially.
“I have already said previously that you cannot transport one reality into another,” Amorim explained after his stay in Lisbon.
“At Manchester United you can't play exactly like that. You can't play as defensively, and so there we will have to adapt.
“It’s clear that it’s really difficult to beat this team [City] and beat Pep Guardiola. And he's not a worse manager than me.
“It will be a completely different world, a different team, we won't have much time to train and we will start from a different starting point.
“People can make their own judgement, but I say to the people of Manchester that this was an isolated case.”
