Manchester City suffered their ninth defeat in 12 games with a crushing 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa.

Pep Guardiola is scrambling to stop the rot, but the reigning Premier League champions' latest performance was as rotten as it gets, with an early goal from Jhon Duran and a second-half strike from Morgan Rogers putting Villa on course to a deserved victory in front of Phil. Foden's late consolation.

City are now sixth in the table, having been pipped to their opponents on Saturday with a full weekend of matches remaining.

Here, Express sport explains how each Blues player performed in the West Midlands…

Man City player ratings vs Aston Villa (4-2-3-1)

Stéphane Ortega: 6

Two massive saves in the first 60 seconds, including a blinder to tip Pau Torres' header over the bar. But ultimately he scored two goals and was shut down by Duran in the second half, almost giving up another.

Rico Lewis: 6 (reserved)

Combined well with Foden to create a decent chance but otherwise a relatively calm game.

John Stones: 5 (Walker, 45 years old)

Shot by Youri Tielemans who fired a superb through ball to start the move which created Duran's opener. It is unclear whether his half-time replacement was injury or tactical related.

Akanji Manual: 6

Couldn't miss with big changes to Jack Grealish in the first half. But he left space for Duran to score the first goal of the match and was beaten too easily before Rogers hit the post.

Josko Gvardiol: 3 (reserved)

A mistake from the kick-off could easily have resulted in a goal. Not on the same wavelength as his teammates. Not convincing at all defensively and the Villa players outplayed him all match.

Ilkay Gundogan: 3 (Savinho, 72)

Did absolutely nothing in midfield and was caught dragging the ball around. A shell of the player that City had in their hands.

Mateo Kovacic: 5 (Doku, 84)

He lost Rogers' run, which set up Villa's opener, and although City had control of the ball for much of the match, Kovacic and his teammates were unable to do much with it.

Bernardo Silva: 6

Some nice touches down the right flank, including a clever pass to create a shooting opportunity for Phil Foden.

Phil Foden: 7

Combined well with Lewis and forced Emi Martinez into a smart save. Smart turn in the second half before his long-range shot missed the target. A lot of luck for his first Premier League goal of the season in stoppage time in the second half, but he took it well.

Jack Grealish: 7 (reserved)

Probably City's most dangerous striker, which isn't saying much. Saw a lot of the ball early on and drew a yellow card on Matty Cash. Make a good cross for Gvardiol but he heads over. I remained silent in the second period.

Erling Haaland: 4

Very little offered and his hold-up game was poor. Haaland's torrid run continues.

SUBSCRIBERS

Kyle Walker: 4

Flayed twice in the same movement by Rogers for Villa's second goal. Not a lot of good things are happening for Walker lately.

Savinho: N/A

A late addition.

Jérémie Doku: N/A

A late addition.
