Kylian Mbappe was ridiculed by his Real Madrid team-mates ahead of their European Super Cup clash with Atalanta after suffering a nightmare warm-up. The 25-year-old was named in Carlo Ancelotti's starting XI for the match in Warsaw, handing him his competitive debut following his summer move from PSG.

But just minutes before kick-off, the France international struggled to score past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois as players took turns shooting.

He was then jeered by his fellow players before his final effort, and pretended to walk off the pitch as he was saved.

On TNT Sportsexplains specialist Rio Ferdinand: “He must have missed a few shots and they were shouting at him before he fired. He missed his last shot and said 'I'm going now', as if he was going to leave it there.”

And Ferdinand went on to suggest that the scenes were a sign that Mbappe would have to get used to a different environment in Madrid. “He's been the alpha male of teams for a long time now,” he continued.

“And I wouldn't have imagined that he would be so ridiculed in the public sessions. But he laughs, he giggles, so I think he took it well.

“But that's going to be a key part of whether he's going to be successful here or not, and whether he's going to continue to be successful. Having that humility, that ability to laugh at yourself a little bit like that and being humble enough to say 'listen guys, I'm here to learn and become a champion with Real Madrid'.

“Because these guys know how to do it. And that's a big part of being able to come into a team like this and fit into a group.”

Ferdinand had previously praised the forward, saying: “If he does the things here that he did at PSG, then it's over (for everyone).”

Mbappe had an early chance to open his club account. He took advantage of a back pass from Federico Valverde, but his close-range shot was blocked.

A win would see Real secure their record sixth Spanish Super Cup. It would also mean a first winner's medal for Mbappe, who is playing in the match for the first time in his career.
