Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was forced to withdraw Kevin De Bruyne for Wednesday night's Champions League clash against Inter Milan.
The Belgian was injured towards the end of the first half and did not reappear in the second half. De Bruyne was briefly left on his knees while physiotherapists were called onto the pitch to assess the damage.
He continued until half-time, but with a blockbuster Premier League clash at home to Arsenal scheduled for Sunday afternoon, Guardiola opted to make the change and avoid risking further problems.
As City's vice-captain and main creative spark, De Bruyne would be sorely missed by City if he does not recover in time to face the Gunners, who are once again expected to be the Blues' closest challengers for the Premier League title this season.
The 33-year-old missed four months of last season with a hamstring problem and Guardiola will be desperate for his fitness to improve this season. But his body will inevitably be pushed to its limits after a gruelling Euro 2024 campaign with Belgium, and amid a congested fixture schedule that includes the Premier League, Carabao Cup and European games.
