Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town have confirmed the signing of Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City on loan.

Kieran McKenna's side have splashed the cash this summer in a bid to avoid relegation to the Championship. The Tractor Boys have enjoyed back-to-back promotions in the last two seasons and have now managed to bolster their ranks with experience and quality.

Phillips joined the club on a season-long loan from City, with Ipswich managing to fend off interest from rivals to secure the midfielder's signature.

Everton and Fulham have both been linked with the 28-year-old in recent weeks, with Serie A sides also said to have long-held interest in securing his signature.

Ipswich hope a campaign at Portman Road will help Phillips revive his career after two difficult seasons with City. The midfielder has struggled since his £45million move from Leeds United.

Phillips never really seemed to fit into Pep Guardiola's system and fell out with his manager after being publicly reprimanded for returning to pre-season training overweight after the World Cup in Qatar.

Last summer, City were open to selling Phillips, but the playmaker insisted he wanted to prove he was capable of being considered as a midfield option behind Rodri. However, he was never offered that opportunity and was sent on short-term loan to West Ham, where he also struggled.

Ipswich will be hoping the positive and upbeat atmosphere at the club will help Phillips find fitness and contribute to their survival. McKenna has already welcomed several new signings into his squad this summer.

Former Chelsea loanee Omari Hutchinson has joined the Tractor Boys permanently after a sensational spell at the club last season. Jacob Greaves, Arijanet Muric and Conor Townsend have also been poached from the Championship. Liam Delay has also joined the club from City for a reported £15m, plus a further £5m in add-ons.

Ipswich have also announced the signing of Sam Szmodics from Blackburn Rovers for a fee believed to be worth £9m. The 28-year-old scored 27 goals in 44 Championship appearances last season and is expected to bring further energy and quality to McKenna's attacking ranks.
