Jamie Carragher has had a humorous reaction to Gary Neville's selection of his Premier League team of the season so far. On Sky Sports Monday Night Football, ahead of Newcastle's 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, the pair had to choose the XI that had impressed them the most during the 2024/25 campaign.

And Carragher was stunned by Neville's choice to select Josko Gvardiol at left-back.

The Croatia international has been the subject of heavy criticism at Manchester City this season, particularly following his disastrous individual performance in the 4-0 home defeat to Tottenham.

“How did you choose Gvardiol at left-back? » exclaimed the former Liverpool defender. “He gives a goal in every match. Have you actually watched Man City?

Neville tried to respond with “Yeah, I've watched them a few times this season…” but was interrupted with “Well, obviously not enough.” What games have you watched? Are you serious? Serious? Oh my God.”

The United prop then tried to justify his choice with an explanation, but “Carra” would have none of it. “We are focusing on the first half of the season and he gave goals, so why did you choose him?” he continued. “If you had observed him, you would not have chosen him.”

Carragher himself opted for Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson. Neville admitted he too was considering the USA international, but argued that no player unequivocally stood out in the position and that Gvardiol was superior going forward.

“You weren’t happy with his seven assists, then Gary?” » Carragher asked, before turning to the camera. “Sky Sports please can you put Gary Neville on more Fulham games please?

Elsewhere, Neville had Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels in goal, with the rest of his back four including Trent Alexander-Arnold, William Saliba and Virgil van Dijk. Ryan Gravenberch and Moises Caicedo sat in front of the back four, with Mohamed Salah, Cole Palmer and Matheus Cunha in attack – and Chris Wood playing the No.9 role.

Carragher's midfield and striker choices were identical, but he opted for Arsenal's David Raya as number 1. And apart from Van Dijk, the defense was different with Ola Aina chosen at right back, Nikola Milenkovic at centre-back and of course Robinson in place of Gvardiol.

Carragher also named Liverpool midfielder Gravenberch as the biggest surprise of the season so far: “When he arrived last year I thought he was more of a No. 8 type, a floater who was a bit of nothing if I'm completely honest, but to say that he became such a disciplined player in front of the back four is a revelation.
