Pep Guardiola has been linked with the England job
Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville may not be fully on board with Thomas Tuchel or Pep Guardiola becoming England manager. At least, if we still believe their previous thoughts.
Guardiola and Tuchel have been heavily linked with the Three Lions as replacements for Gareth Southgate in recent days. It emerged earlier this week that Manchester City manager Guardiola, whose contract with the Premier League champions expires next summer, is being considered by the FA.
Guardiola, 53, has already said he wants to succeed at the World Cup and with his contract with the Manchester blue team expiring next summer, the timing could be perfect for all parties. However, the Catalan is not the only high-profile manager to have been tapped for the role, as Thomas Tuchel, who has been a free agent since leaving Bayern Munich, is also said to be in the frame.
However, Neville and Carragher both admitted this summer that they believe the next England manager should be English. It remains to be seen whether two candidates of the quality of Guardiola and Tuchel will sufficiently change minds.
Shortly after Southgate's resignation in July, Neville told Sky Sports: “Over the years we've had every type of manager – the fashionable manager, the international manager, the best English managers, people who came through the ranks with youth teams. There is no science as to what works and there are obvious competitors.
“Graham Potter and Eddie Howe will be mentioned and I think it will definitely be an English manager. Moving to St George's Park was intended to promote and develop English coaches. To take that away from an English manager and give it to an international manager would be a mistake.”
Without completely closing the door on the possibility of a foreign coach becoming manager, Neville added: “You can't rule out Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola, sensational managers like that, but we don't develop our own managers. English coaching has a long history. There is a long way to go to catch up with the other big nations and put them in the biggest environments and in the toughest matches. also added on Sky Sports: “I think we should stay [with] an English coach.”
Both Neville and Carragher have spoken candidly about the idea of a non-English manager taking over.
Carragher offered a similar view. He said: “I don't believe in foreign managers running England. It's nothing against foreigners – what foreign managers and players have done to the Premier League is incredible.” world. But we are not an emerging nation, we are England and I know we have only won one trophy but other countries at our level – Italy, Spain, Germany – n have no foreign coaches. We don't need a foreign manager, we've already done that.”
Continuing, he added: “I was involved at that time under Sven [Goran-Eriksson] and Fabio Capello – it wasn't great. Not the slightest trace of what Gareth Southgate did. He had no management background before getting this job and I think that in itself shows that it's not about looking for the best manager in club football. Club football is completely different.
“Spain just won the tournament with a coach that no one really knows. I don't really believe that you have to have a Jurgen Klopp or a Pep Guardiola and that will make the difference.
“International football is knockout football. If you look at the Champions League, Pep Guardiola doesn't win it every year even though he is the best coach and probably has the best team. Things can go wrong, things can happen.
