Matheus Nunes could leave Manchester City next week
Matheus Nunes' future at Manchester City is uncertain following Ilkay Gundogan's surprise return to the club.
The 33-year-old Germany star joined the English champions this week on a free transfer from Barcelona after his time at the Camp Nou ended abruptly after just a year.
The unexpected return is a sign of the struggles ahead for Nunes, who finds himself further down the pecking order. The Portugal international, who joined City from Wolves last year for a reported £54m, has struggled to establish himself under Pep Guardiola, making just 17 league appearances last season.
According to today's Daily Star, Newcastle are keeping tabs on his situation but can only offer a loan deal at this stage of the window.
Liverpool and Chelsea showed interest earlier in the window, and now West Ham and Everton are also monitoring developments, with a loan offer and a £40m option to buy being the most likely package.
Despite rejecting a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, the 25-year-old former Sporting star is frustrated by his lack of game time and would welcome the opportunity to revive his career by joining another Premier League side.
If he expresses a desire to leave, City boss Guardiola will not block his departure.
The Spanish manager admits he cannot promise Nunes more than a bit-part role this season, a situation made worse by the return of City's treble-winning captain Gundogan.
City have already let Julian Alvarez, Kalvin Phillips, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Sergio Gomez, Tommy Doyle, Micah Hamilton and Yan Couto leave over the summer.
More departures are expected before Friday's deadline, including Nunes and compatriot Joao Cancelo.
