Erling Haaland asked about his new Man City contract ahead of PSG game
Erling Haaland confidently dismissed concerns over the upcoming verdict on the 115 charges against Manchester City, as he was questioned about his staggering new nine-and-a-half-year contract.
The Norwegian striker, who has been a sensation since arriving from Borussia Dortmund, is said to earn a basic £500,000-a-week with the Premier League giants.
Haaland's signing comes as City battle the Premier League over charges levied against them for allegedly breaching financial rules, which could lead to hefty sanctions such as a hefty points deduction or even relegation.
Despite the situation, with a verdict expected in the spring following a hearing before an independent commission, Haaland remains unfazed.
“No, I didn't think about it or anything,” he told a press conference ahead of City's Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, while being questioned on the accusations against him. “At the end of the day, I really don't think I should talk too much about it because I've been here for two and a half years and I'm convinced that the club knows what it's doing.
With rumors swirling of potential interest from Real Madrid and comments from his father Alf-Inge hinting at a future transfer, Haaland appears set to stay at the Etihad for the long term.
He added: “First of all, those are his words, not mine. When I signed for City I said it felt like home and of course I meant it. I Really looking forward to spending so many more years in Manchester, it’s going to be amazing.”
Directly addressing the question of whether he was happy to have ruled out Madrid, Haaland replied confidently: “I just signed a nine-and-a-half year contract, so what do you want me to say? Of course I'm thrilled.” with that, I'm super happy with my choice, I'm looking forward to spending many years in Manchester and that's really it.
Haaland also insists surpassing Alan Shearer's legendary record of 260 Premier League goals is not on his mind. Asked about the record, he simply replied: “Not really, no.”
As City prepare for a crucial match in Paris, where City have picked up just eight points from six league matches and PSG just one point away, the upcoming clash could be decisive for both teams' chances of qualifying for the round of 16. excluding stages.
City boss Pep Guardiola acknowledged the importance of the match but remained uncertain about the points needed to secure progress. Guardiola said: “Of course it's a very important match for us and for PSG, but we still have another match against Brugge at home.
“I don't know how many points we will need. Six points will be mathematically (of course), but maybe four, maybe three.
“But if we don’t qualify, we have to accept that we weren’t good enough.”
Guardiola is set to welcome John Stones into the fold following an ankle problem, but will be unable to call on recent signings Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov. “Welcome to the family,” beamed the Man City boss. “We’re really happy to have them.”
