Lee Carsley is expected to name his final England squad at 2pm ahead of crucial UEFA Nations League matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland later this month. The Three Lions will meet for the final time until March at the end of the week with the ultimate aim of regaining promotion to Europe's elite nations.

Thomas Tuchel will be watching both games closely as he prepares to step into the hot seat as Gareth Southgate's permanent successor in January.

Carsley has not looked comfortable since temporarily leaving his Under-21 role to replace Southgate after he resigned after Euro 2024.

And, to make matters more difficult this month, England's caretaker manager is battling a looming injury crisis ahead of two must-win outings.

Carsley could be missing at least nine senior players when he unveils his final group of players this afternoon.

This could open the door for players from Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United, among others, to get a reprieve after recent snubs.

There is also an opportunity for a handful of exciting first call-ups amid remarkable performances at the start of the Premier League season.

Lee Carsley's exterior options

Reece James, Curtis Jones and Marcus Rashford are among the England players potentially in line for a recall amid Lee Carsley's injuries.

Jones is yet to win his first cap but has been training with Gareth Southgate's provisional squad ahead of Euro 2024.

Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall is another uncapped player in the frame as injuries continue to strike Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell.

Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers could be in line for a first call-up amid his starting status under Unai Emery.

Callum Hudson-Odoi has also had a good start to the season at Nottingham Forest and will no doubt be considered.

England could miss nine through injury

England could be left without nine senior players if club bosses intervene ahead of the busy festive schedule.

Declan Rice injured his foot in Arsenal's defeat at Newcastle United and missed the Gunners' trip to Inter Milan on Wednesday.

In the meantime, Cole Palmer was absent from Chelsea training after being the target of a nasty challenge from Lisandro Martinez at the weekend.

At Manchester City, John Stones And Jack Grealish are among the many players missing from Pep Guardiola in recent matches.
