Former England international Wes Brown has thrown cold water on criticism over the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as Gareth Southgate's permanent successor. The FA's decision to snub an English manager in favor of Tuchel's experience and winning pedigree has sparked as much condemnation as enthusiasm.

Eddie Howe, Graham Potter and Lee Carsley were among those heavily linked with the job, but Tuchel emerged as the favorite after leaving Bayern Munich in the summer.

England manager Anthony Barry will assist the former Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea boss, but that is not enough to save the FA from scrutiny after interviewing “several” candidates.

Brown, who spent 15 years of his playing career at Manchester United, won 23 senior caps for England.

And the former defender has no problem with Tuchel's arrival, assured the German has been seen as the best man for the job.

“I have no problem with [Tuchel being a foreign manager] at all,” Brown told Express Sport on behalf of Instant Casino.

“I've had foreign managers for England, and if [the FA] I think he's the best for the job, so so be it. »

Brown is unsure if any of England's current stalwarts will particularly thrive under Tuchel compared to Southgate.

However, the 45-year-old believes the Three Lions players will have no problem adapting to Tuchel's new demands on the road to qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

He continued: “I've never met him, so I don't really know [if any players in particular will benefit from Tuchel’s style of play].

“But I'm sure he will do what he does best, and he will try to get the best out of the players. I don't know his style or how he manages, but I'm sure the players I will learn it very quickly.”

Carsley's tenure as England interim manager ends this month with two must-win UEFA Nations League matches.

England travel to Athens this evening to face League B Group 2 leaders Greece.

The visitors will know that anything less than a win to avenge last month's 2-1 defeat at Wembley would end any hopes of automatic promotion to the competition's top tier.

Next, the Republic of Ireland travel to Wembley on Sunday to conclude the campaign and mark the start of the Tuchel era.

He will take charge of England for the first time in March, as World Cup qualifying begins.
