Ederson's wife has slammed claims the Manchester City goalkeeper was affected by praise from his No2 Stefan Ortega last season. The Brazilian was linked with a move away from the English champions this summer but Lais Moraes insisted he was not unhappy at the club.

Ederson has been Pep Guardiola's number one goalkeeper since his move from Benfica in 2017. However, he was forced to miss the final game of last season with concussion.

The 30-year-old suffered a head injury in City's crucial 2-0 win over Tottenham in May. Ortega, Ederson's replacement, made an excellent save to deny Son Heung-min a goal that was seen as key to Guardiola's side holding off title challengers Arsenal.

The Athletic claimed Ederson had been affected by the praise for Ortega's performance, including some suggestions from City fans that he had failed to stop Son's attempt. However, his wife Lais dismissed this as “fake news”.

In response to an Instagram post from fan account @City_Xtra that regurgitated the information, she wrote: “Educate yourself first, this is fake news.”

Ederson has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, with Al-Nassr reportedly interested in a potential deal, although City are likely to ask for a fee of at least £50m.

His City team-mate Kevin De Bruyne is also attracting interest from the Saudi Pro League, who will once again be willing to spend huge sums on Europe's best players. De Bruyne has not ruled out a surprise exit from the Etihad Stadium as he plays for Belgium at Euro 2024.

However, Guardiola has assured that the playmaker will remain at the club this season, even though the 33-year-old is entering the final year of his contract.

“Kevin is not leaving,” Guardiola said in the United States ahead of City's 4-3 defeat to Celtic earlier this week.

The City manager also insisted his side are likely to look very similar to the one that lifted the Premier League trophy in May, potentially ruling out any major signings. Brazilian winger Savinho, 20, is the club's only new signing, arriving from City Football Group-owned Troyes for a reported £20m.

“If someone leaves, we will talk about it and, of course, until the last day. [of the transfer window] “We have chances,” Guardiola continued.

“I don't rule out the idea of having new players, but I think there's an 85, 90, 95 percent chance we'll have the same team.”
