Denis Law dead: Man Utd icon dies aged 84 as family releases emotional statement

Denis Law has sadly passed away at the age of 84

Manchester United and Scotland legend Denis Law has died aged 84, his family has confirmed.

Law revealed in 2021 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. His children revealed he had fought an “uphill battle” while expressing gratitude to those who cared for him in his final years.

Their statement read: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a hard battle but is finally now at peace.

“We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his well-being and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made a difference. THANKS.”

United said they were “deeply saddened” by the death of the player who scored 237 goals in 404 games for them, placing him third on the all-time list behind Wayne Rooney and Sir Bobby Charlton.

Three and a half years ago, when Law went public with his diagnosis, he said: “It’s not going to be an easy journey, especially for the people who love you most.

“I know that the road ahead will be difficult, demanding, painful and ever-changing and I therefore ask for understanding and patience. I understand what is happening and that is why I want to resolve my situation now while I can.”

Law, who played as a centre-forward, was born in Aberdeen but came through the ranks at Huddersfield Town. A brief spell at Manchester City preceded a spell in Italy at Turin, before the start of his 11-year association with the Red Devils, during which he won the Ballon d'Or in 1964.

The Scotland international, who scored 30 goals in 55 games for his country, ended his career with another season at City.

Brian Kidd, who also played for both Manchester sides, was among those to pay tribute to Law. He told journalist Andy Mitten: “He was slight, with the heart of a lion. An incredible finisher, he scored all types of goals.

“He said to me: 'If you ever get wide, don't look up, put the cross down early. If I'm not there, it's my fault'. He was usually there. Sir Matt [Busby] loved him. We've all done it. He was the king of Stretford End. »
