Former Hull City striker Dean Windass has been criticized for appearing to question why Kyle Walker revealed he was the victim of racist abuse last week. The Manchester City defender posted a screenshot of a direct message on Instagram containing racist abuse after playing for the reigning Premier League champions in their 2-0 defeat to Juventus last week.

“No one should ever be subjected to the kind of vile, racist and threatening abuse I have received since last night's game,” Walker wrote Thursday.

“Instagram and the authorities must prevent this from happening for the sake of everyone who experiences this abuse. This is never acceptable. To our fans, we will continue to work as a team to do better, improve and reach the milestone together.

Walker shared a screenshot of the Instagram story with [a legend] buddy but seriously, what are you doing, come on pretty bad games.

The 55-year-old may have been referring to Walker going down easily in an attempt to have Rasmus Hojlund sent off during the Manchester derby. The duo clashed in the first half of the clash at the Etihad Stadium, in which Manchester United beat City in dramatic fashion 2-1.

However, it was pointed out to Windass that sending the message to Walker in response to his post about racial abuse was insensitive.

“Probably better tweets to reply to about this Dean guy?” wrote @tommyuto.

@TDWigan1982 replied: “Not really the time or place Deano.”

Windass then deleted his response on Tuesday morning.

Walker was part of the City team that lost the Manchester derby on Sunday. Pep Guardiola's side took the lead through Josko Gvardiol's first-half header.

United staged a spectacular comeback, equalizing in the 88th minute thanks to a Bruno Fernandes penalty. Amad Diallo, who had won the spot-kick, sensationally struck a superb winner as the clock ticked into added time. It was United's first victory at the Etihad Stadium since 2021.

Walker's actions during the incident with Hojlund were branded embarrassing by Sky Sports trio Roy Keane, Micah Richards and Gary Neville. Both players were booked after clashing in the 37th minute, with Hojlund later mocking Walker for falling to the ground and holding his face.

“Manchester is red, violets are blue, what a brilliant performance, but the Oscar is yours,” Hojlund wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of his clash with Walker.
