Dani Carvajal will undergo surgery in the coming days after suffering a serious knee injury during Real Madrid's 2-0 win over Villarreal.
Carvajal, 32, was in tears as he was carried off the field on a stretcher following a challenge with Yeremy Pino on Saturday.
A statement from the Spanish club said: “Following examinations carried out on Dani Carvajal by Real Madrid's medical services, the player was diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, a ruptured external collateral ligament and a ruptured popliteal tendon of the right leg. He will be operated on in the coming days.”
In a message posted on Instagram, Spain international Carvajal wrote: “Serious cruciate ligament injury confirmed. I will have to undergo surgery and be out of action for a few months.”
“I’m already looking forward to starting recovery and coming back like a beast.”
Vinicius Junior's superb long-range effort sealed Real Madrid's 2-0 home win to put them level on points with La Liga leaders Barcelona. But the Brazilian is also concerned about his injuries after leaving the field holding his shoulder.
Barcelona, who remain at the top of the table on goal difference, will play Alavés on Sunday.
