Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 900th career goal during the recent international break, leading to speculation that he is set to be celebrated with a limited edition coin that could become the ultimate collectible. The Manchester United and Real Madrid legend has broken numerous records throughout his illustrious career, and his rivalry with Lionel Messi is likely to be considered the greatest in football history.

There is no denying that the 39-year-old is nearing the end of his playing career, but he continues to shine in the colours of Portugal. Despite winning five Ballons d'Or and as many Champions Leagues, his Euro 2016 victory will undoubtedly rank among his greatest achievements.

On a personal level, Ronaldo also holds the record for most international goals, with 132 in 214 appearances for his country. Ronaldo has yet to set a date for his final retirement, but it seems that Portugal could commemorate the striker's exploits with a special €7 coin. The hypothetical 'CR7' coin would be worth well above its face value, with experts estimating it at £113,000.

“With Cristiano Ronaldo being one of the most recognizable sports figures in the world, the CR7 Euro Coin is expected to generate significant interest from collectors and fans,” said Dan Barrett of Pacific Precious Metals. “Given the coin’s gold content and Ronaldo’s global success, we could see this coin sell for as much as $150,000.” [£113k] on the collectors market.

“The combination of a limited edition, gold content and the Ronaldo brand will ensure that the value of this coin will increase rapidly, especially when it hits the secondary market. Collectors will see it as a unique opportunity.”

The proposed Ronaldo coin would not only celebrate his immense cultural impact in Portugal, but would also become a treasured item for his fans around the world. The Al-Nassr star has not spoken about his hopes of playing in the 2026 World Cup, but is extremely proud of having won Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League with the national team. Fresh from scoring his 900th career goal, Ronaldo is already looking ahead to his next feat.

“Only I and the people around me know how hard it is to work every day to be physically and psychologically healthy and reach the goal of 900,” Ronaldo said. “It is a unique milestone in my career and it is with great emotion that I celebrated this goal.”

“It means a lot. It was the number I wanted to reach for a long time and I knew I would achieve it because, as I played more, it would happen naturally. I have already won two trophies with Portugal, something I really wanted. What comes next will be spectacular.”

Brazilian legend Pele is among the select group of 1,000 goals scored, most of them in friendlies, with tours being the most notable in his era. Before scoring his historic goal, Ronaldo admitted his intention to redefine the record books.

“Soon I'm going to score 900, then 1,000,” Ronaldo told his former Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand. “If I don't have any injuries, that's the most important thing, I want that. My challenge is to reach 1,000 goals, with one difference that every goal I score will be recorded on video. So I can prove it.”
