Ruben Amorim and Cristiano Ronaldo were once teammates at international level
Cristiano Ronaldo would still be welcome to make a sensational return to Old Trafford under new boss Ruben Amorim, says former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham. Ronaldo, who was initially spotted by Sir Alex Ferguson at the age of 18 and transformed into a world-class winger, has made a spectacular return home in 2021.
However, after an explosive interview with Piers Morgan just 18 months later, he left for the Saudi Pro League and Al Nassr, where he is now the face of the competition and already owns a record Golden Boot.
Despite past tensions between the 39-year-old and United, Sheringham believes a return to Manchester is not out of the question. With Amorim, a former international teammate of Ronaldo, set to take charge later this month, a return cannot be ruled out.
“Cristiano Ronaldo would be welcome at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim,” Sheringham told FlashScore. “But he’s aiming for bigger and better things.
“I think Ronaldo will follow the path of David Beckham by doing things outside of coaching, more publicized things around the world.”
Sheringham admitted that while Ronaldo would always be welcome at United, he is unlikely to return in a coaching role, despite the planned arrival of his compatriot Amorim on November 11: “I'm sure he would be welcome in any capacity returning to the club,” Sheringham continued. “But I doubt he’ll be a coach.”

Ronaldo himself echoes this sentiment, sharing on his YouTube channel, UR, that his future likely lies in his various business ventures rather than chasing coaching badges.
“For me, it will be difficult one day to be a coach because I have no passion for this generation,” Ronaldo admitted. “It's difficult, especially in football, because they don't follow our experience. They think they know everything; they think phones will give you a good education, TikTok, Instagram.
“I have other things to worry about, another chapter of my life that is a part of my business that I am passionate about. It will be a challenge for me to learn other areas that I don't know more involved in my business, and I think I'll be good.”
