David Raya fell in the second half of Arsenal's draw at Manchester City
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya should have been booked for a match simulation against Manchester City, new footage shows. The Spaniard went down during a second-half display at the Etihad Stadium in which the Gunners' players were criticised for their time-wasting tactics.
Raya was about to take a shot on goal when video footage from above in the stands, obtained by multiple media outlets, shows a member of Arsenal's coaching staff beginning to signal him to come down.
Substitute Myles Lewis-Skelly then ran along the touchline to communicate with Raya, who eventually collapsed on the turf and told referee Michael Oliver he needed medical attention.
The incident occurred during City's assault on Arsenal's penalty area in the second half, with the reigning Premier League champions trailing 2-1 and playing with 10 men after Leandro Trossard was sent off.
Raya's fall allowed Arsenal to make a vital break in the game, with manager Mikel Arteta calling most of his players to the touchline and giving them instructions as time ticked down. Oliver booked Lewis-Skelly for unsporting behaviour for his part in the fiasco.
But because he did not have all the information relating to the incident, including what had been said to Raya and the Arsenal manager's instruction to come down, Oliver was unable to caution the goalkeeper for faking an injury.
Michael Oliver refereed a fiery clash between Manchester City and Arsenal on Sunday
Several other Gunners stars suffered cramp or injury in the final minutes of Sunday's titanic battle in Manchester. But City finally salvaged a point in the 98th minute, when substitute John Stones finally managed to break through the visitors' impenetrable defensive wall to make it 2-2.
Despite Arsenal resorting to the dark arts to keep City out for so long, Guardiola did not appear bitter after the final whistle, during which he shook former assistant Arteta's hand with a smile on his face.
“They put the players on the line and showed incredible commitment,” the City boss told the BBC. “I think we're not capable of doing that as a team. Big compliment to Arsenal because they defended every ball until the end. We created chances, not clear-cut chances, because they did [Riccardo] Calafiori, [William] Saliba, Gabriel, [Thomas] Party, [Declan] Rice.
“It was very difficult. The second balls didn't fall because they wanted to stop the game and stop the play. We know how much they stopped the game in the second half. In the end, we got what we tried to do.”
