Gabriel Jesus has paid a concise but powerful tribute to Ilkay Gundogan amid rumours swirling over his uncertain future at Barcelona. The former Manchester City star, who chose Spain in the summer of 2023 rather than extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium, is now reportedly considering a return to the Premier League.

After just one season with the Blaugrana, Gundogan is open to a move away, a sentiment echoed by his former coach Pep Guardiola according to The Athletic. Talks have been initiated with Gundogan's representatives by his former club, indicating that a crucial move is looming for the 33-year-old midfielder.

Adding to the intrigue, Gundogan also publicly announced his retirement from international football, sharing a heartfelt statement on Instagram: “Dear Germany Football, after a few weeks of reflection, I have made the decision that it is time to end my national team career.”

Reflecting on his journey, he expressed pride in his 82 caps for Germany, a feat he had not envisaged when he made his debut in 2011. Among the flood of responses was a terse but telling comment from his former team-mate Jesus, who heaped glowing praise on him and could potentially be open to a reunion in north London: “What a player.”

With Jesus' congratulations, Gundogan's next move is highly anticipated. While a return to Manchester City is on the horizon, Arsenal remain a potential suitor, especially given their interest during last year's period of uncertainty for the midfielder and the possible reconnection with Arteta.

Arsenal sporting director Edu is prioritising a deal for Real Sociedad's Mikel Merino ahead of this weekend's Premier League clash with Aston Villa.

If that move is completed quickly, the Gunners could then turn their attention to signing Gundogan, whose contract in Spain expires next summer. A reunion with Guardiola seems the most likely outcome, but if that doesn't happen, Arsenal could certainly pursue it, especially given Jesus' obvious admiration for him.
