Manchester United have reportedly requested a free transfer for former Manchester City star Leroy Sane. The striker could become a free agent at the end of the season if negotiations with Bayern Munich fail.

Sane has not started a single Bundesliga or Champions League match for the Bavarians this season. The signing of Michael Olise pushed the 28-year-old up the pecking order. Vincent Kompany also preferred Jamal Musiala and Kingsley Coman in attack behind Harry Kane.

United have lacked quality and consistency on their right wing in recent years. Antony has struggled following his £86 million move from Ajax, Amad Diallo has yet to emerge as one of the Premier League's best players, while Alejandro Garnacho's best performances occurred on the left.

According to German publication Bild, United therefore carried out an investigation into the signing of Sane. The Germany international could be one of the first signings in Ruben Amorim's first summer window as head coach in 2025.

Sane made 135 appearances for neighbors City between 2016 and 2020. He scored 39 goals and provided 43 assists, as well as winning two Premier League titles and the FA Cup.

The report claims that Sané will wait until Bayern begin negotiations over a new deal before deciding on his future. Arsenal are also said to be interested.

Meanwhile, Amorim is set to take charge at United from November 11. The 39-year-old's final match at the helm of Sporting will take place on Sunday against his former club Braga.

The new United boss has already pleased fans by overseeing Sporting's remarkable 4-1 win over City in the Champions League on Tuesday. Striker Viktor Gyokeres scored a hat-trick in the huge win over rivals United.

The Swedish striker has previously been linked with Old Trafford, but Amorim has refused to comment on whether he will join him at United.

When asked if he wanted to sign Gyokeres from Sporting, Amorim replied: “No, no, no. I can't be funny about this. At that point it was hard for me to leave, if I start joking with your cameras I'm in trouble. It's my city, it's my country so I will respect [that].

“Viktor has to stay until the end of the season and then maybe his life will go elsewhere.”
