Piers Morgan responds to Manchester City after Arsenal draw at the Etihad
Arsenal fan Piers Morgan has hit back at criticism from Manchester City supporters that the Gunners used the “dark arts” to secure a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta put his 10 players behind the ball to defend their 2-1 lead after Leandro Trossard was sent off in the first half. Several Gunners stars were also injured or cramped in an apparent attempt to run down the clock.
The plan worked perfectly until City finally managed to break through in the eighth minute of added time when John Stones rescued a valuable point for the reigning champions.
Blues fans were not overly impressed with the way Arsenal approached the second half, which was summed up by Manchester United legend Gary Neville, who told Sky Sports: “I think the word ends in 'housery'.”
Prominent Gunners supporter Morgan appeared on talkSPORT the morning after the game, where he refuted criticism based on City's ongoing legal battle over alleged breaches of financial rules.
“It really takes something to be lectured about morality by a team that currently faces 115 misconduct charges in the Premier League,” he said.
“The most blatant offences ever committed against a club in the history of the Premier League. So forgive me if I don't take a lesson in the dark arts from Manchester City.”
Several Arsenal players received medical treatment in the second half
After a four-year investigation into City's finances, the club was charged and referred to an independent commission in February. The charges include failing to provide accurate financial information and failing to cooperate with the Premier League's investigation.
The city has consistently denied the charges and said a “comprehensive body of compelling evidence” would clear its name. A hearing on all 115 charges began earlier this month and is expected to last several more weeks.
If found guilty, sanctions could include significant points deductions or even expulsion from the Premier League.
Pep Guardiola's side are top of the table after five games of the new season, with Sunday's draw against Arsenal taking them a point clear of Liverpool and Aston Villa.
City are chasing a record fifth consecutive league title, while the Gunners are still searching for their first under Arteta after falling short in each of the last two seasons.
