Trent Alexander-Arnold has spoken honestly about what he wants from a move to Liverpool
Trent Alexander-Arnold has refused to guarantee his Liverpool future beyond the summer, saying his decision will be influenced by the club's success.
Alexander-Arnold's contract is set to expire in June, sparking fears among supporters that the vice-captain could break his two-decade relationship with the Reds and leave on a free transfer.
However, the England defender acknowledges that openly expressing his desire to stay at Liverpool beyond this season would weaken his negotiating power.
Alexander-Arnold, 25, maintains his discussions with the club will remain confidential and stresses his primary motivation is to win trophies.
“To be honest, the most important thing is the trophies,” he said. “I want to win trophies. I am a player who is very motivated by trophies, by winning things and being an elite player.
“That’s probably the biggest factor in everything. If you have the personality of an elite athlete who wants to win and will do anything to win, then that’s what motivates him.
“I've been at the club for 20 years now. I've signed four or five contract extensions and none of them have been revealed in public and this one won't be either.”
Asked about his future, Alexander-Arnold simply said: “I want to be a Liverpool player this season, that's what I'll say.”
The prospect of becoming captain is another attractive factor for Alexander-Arnold, who has always aspired to lead his boyhood club.
“I want to be captain of this club, it's one of my goals,” he added. “Whether that happens or not, it's not up to me, to be honest.”
