Ddefending champion real Madrid could not manage more than a 1-1 draw at Mallorca in Kylian Mbappe's first Spanish league game on Sunday.
In his second game for Real Madrid after his midweek debut, Mbappe failed to score. The Frenchman had scored in Real Madrid's 2-0 win over Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti started with the same team that beat Atalanta, with Rodrygo, Vinicius Junior and Mbappe in attack.
Rodrygo gave Real the lead against Mallorca in the 13th minute, but the home side equalised through Vedat Muriqi's goal in the 53rd minute.
Madrid defender Ferland Mendy was sent off in second-half added time for a serious foul on Muriqi.
Rafael Nadal, originally from the island of Mallorca, was among those who attended the match at the Son Moix stadium.
Sociedad stunned at home
Real Sociedad, who finished sixth last season, were beaten 2-1 at home by Rayo Vallecano, who fought to avoid relegation last season.
Jorge de Frutos and Sergio Camello scored in the second half to give Rayo the lead, while Sociedad only found the back of the net thanks to Martín Zubimendi's stoppage-time goal.
Robert Lewandowski scored twice to give Barcelona a 2-1 win at Valencia on Saturday in coach Hansi Flick's Spanish league debut.
Atletico Madrid travel to Villarreal on Monday.
