A steady start to the January transfer window threatens to accelerate, with Manchester City taking particularly significant steps to salvage their dismal start to the season.

Pep Guardiola's side are closing in on three big contracts, with Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov set to be the first through the doors of the Etihad Stadium. Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush and Palmeiras star Vitor Reis could follow soon after.

Tottenham have already been busy, with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky making his Carabao Cup debut earlier this week. The likes of Manchester United and Newcastle are expected to join by the end of the month, provided funds can be freed up for further investment.

Chelsea plot raid on Premier League rivals

Chelsea are admirers of Bournemouth defender Illia Zabarnyi, according to The i.

The Cherries have a flock of promising youngsters that top clubs will likely try to lure over the next 12 months.

Milos Kerkez and Dean Huijsen are among them, but defender Zabarnyi, 22, is the player Chelsea like.

Newcastle are also keen on the Ukrainian, who joined Bournemouth from Dynamo Kyiv in 2023.

Man Utd want £46m outcast

Manchester United retain an interest in Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, according to Spanish publication Sport.

The Uruguayan has only played once all season due to injury, and even since recovering several weeks ago, he has remained on the sidelines under Hansi Flick.

United are long-term admirers of Araujo, who is valued at £46m by Barca.

And although the Red Devils are not expected to invest heavily in a central defender this window, they could test the waters this summer.

Unless Marcus Rashford's proposed loan move to Barcelona opens a window of opportunity.
