Real Madrid have reportedly turned down the opportunity to sign Virgil van Dijk from Liverpool, despite his agent offering him to the Spanish giants. The Dutch defender is currently set to become a free agent this summer, with no new deal agreed at Anfield.

Since joining Southampton in 2018, the 33-year-old has been instrumental in Liverpool's Champions League and Premier League victories.

However, if new terms are not agreed, he could leave for nothing at the end of the season, alongside Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

According to Spanish media outlet Relevo, Van Dijk's agent offered a possible free transfer to Real Madrid, but the club refused.

It is reported that the player's representative has informed Madrid officials of the veteran defender's interest in joining the Bernabeu, particularly given his recent injury problems in central defense.

However, Madrid rejected the offer as they are targeting other players more aligned with their project. As well as Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold is also linked with Real Madrid, with a bid for the right-back having already been turned down.

Van Dijk spoke out amid rumors circulating about his and Alexander-Arnold's future following Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

Despite a less than stellar performance that sparked suggestions of distraction, Van Dijk dismissed the claims, saying: “I agree with [speculation]. Trent has his own people around him, his family and we are there too. He wants to perform in the best possible way, like we all do. This is the main objective. In my opinion, maybe ask him, that's what entertainment is… gaming.”
