Manchester City have confirmed that a supporter died yesterday following a medical emergency during the Manchester derby. The supporter sadly lost his life after an incident during the Premier League match with Manchester United at the Etihad.

A club statement read: “Manchester City are aware of the tragic news of the death of one of our supporters following a medical incident during yesterday's match.

“The thoughts of everyone at the Club are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”

City have not confirmed the age or identity of the supporter, nor explained the exact cause of his death. The match was not interrupted due to a medical incident.

Championship side Luton Town were among those to respond to City's message, writing: “We send our condolences to their family, friends and everyone at Manchester City at this time.”

The Citizens lost 2-1 after a late United comeback inspired by Amad Diallo. Josko Gvardiol had given the hosts the lead with a first-half header, but Diallo won a penalty from Matheus Nunes with minutes remaining.

Bruno Fernandes stepped up to pull United level before the Red Devils stole the winner less than two minutes later after Ivory Coast winger Diallo latched onto a long pass from Lisandro Martinez, sending the ball over from Ederson and shooting from an angle.

United's victorious manager Ruben Amorim said: “It was incredible. I think we deserved it. It was a very difficult game but we believed in it until the end. We managed to score, we needed this victory.

“It was important for us and for our fans. We played for 90 minutes and that's very good. We talk about the game against Arsenal, we played well in the first half but they didn't believe we could win .

“Today was so much more different. I believed in it too. Then we had 'Fergie Hour' and we put things together and something magical happened. It was a good day for us.

“They [the fans] I need it. Just like us, but you can see the way they celebrate is special. But we must continue. Our club needs to win these kinds of matches, I understand the happiness of our supporters but we must continue.”

Reigning Premier League champions Man City have now lost eight of their last 11 matches in all competitions, winning just one. It was an unusually fruitless sequence, with the absence of the injured Rodri proving catastrophic.

Pep Guardiola conceded: “We conceded both goals. … That's how it is. What can I say? It's a difficult season. We didn't play our best because in certain positions we we are not our best.

“There is no defense. We haven't lost eight games in two seasons, now we lose eight in a few days. We can't talk about goals when we lose a lot of games, and most of the time, these things happen.

“We have to move forward and try to find the solution and try to win games. We need results to boost our morale.

“When things get worse, the reality is this. I am the manager of these players and this club. I have to find a solution and so far I haven't found it. That's the truth.”
