Liverpool beat Man City 2-0 on Sunday
Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City fell 11 points behind leaders Liverpool on Sunday, indicating a new English champion will be crowned in May. City suffered a 2-0 defeat at Anfield, marking their fourth consecutive league defeat and seventh match without a win in all competitions.
They now sit fifth in the Champions League and look to bounce back against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Liverpool have taken a significant lead in the league, sitting nine points clear of their nearest competitors, Arsenal and Chelsea.
Both London teams also celebrated their victories this weekend, with Arsenal beating West Ham and Chelsea beating Aston Villa.
According to a prediction from Casino supercomputer Hawks, Liverpool are on the verge of clinching the title, which would be their first since 2020, when they were unbeaten until February under Jurgen Klopp and finished the season with 99 points. It would be their 20th title overall, tied with Manchester United.
The race promises to be close, but not with City. Predictions put Arsenal second, behind Liverpool by just three points, meaning they would have closed the current gap significantly. City should be in third place with seven points behind.
Ruben Amorim's Man Utd set to finish ninth
Manchester United, under the new leadership of coach Ruben Amorim, have shown promise, but the supercomputer remains skeptical about their chances of winning European football, placing them ninth, behind Brighton, Newcastle and Brentford.
The Red Devils have never finished lower than eighth in a Premier League season. However, United could still secure a place in Europe with a cup win, as they did in the 2023-24 season.
They are set to face Tottenham in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals and currently hold a Europa League play-off spot. Their FA Cup defense begins in the third round in January.
The predicted Premier League table
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was interim manager of United, will now focus on keeping Leicester City in the Premier League.
However, the supercomputer predicts the Foxes will fail, putting them in the relegation zone alongside newly promoted Ipswich and Southampton.
Despite leading the pack, Liverpool remain grounded. After their recent 2-0 triumph over City, manager Arne Slot highlighted the quality of the teams chasing them in the title race.
He said: “I don’t think anyone, myself included, would have predicted this. [start]. knew Jurgen [Klopp] left the team in a very good position.
“But nevertheless, winning so much with all the difficult teams we have already faced is not something you could predict at the start of the season. But, as I said, I saw Arsenal yesterday and Chelsea today and saw City.
“They will come back because these teams have so much quality. They could go the same route as us, so we have to stay alert and focused.”
